Buddyin' Up & a Currently....

It's Saturday, which means it's time to link up with
my super sweet friend, Joanne,
 for Spark Student Motivation Saturdays.

I live in a pod settin'.
My very best friend in the whole wide world
teaches next door to me.
 She teaches 3rd and I teach 5th.
We have an accordion wall that separates our class.
It is never fully closed all the way.
We suffer from separation anxiety.
We buddy up almost every day for a quick activity.
This week we buddied up for a speakin' & listenin' activity
which then turned into a buddy writin' activity.

3rd Grade buddies read their question card
to their 5th Grade buddy.

After readin', they discussed their answers
with one another.

Then they began writin' their responses together.

The 3rd Graders look up to the 5th Graders...
BIG time!
We have many discussions about bein' wonderful
role-models for their buddies.
I believe buddyin' up is SO beneficial
for both groups of students.
I definitely know they each take away
somethin' positive from their experiences
with one another.
When one or the other does somethin'
spectacular, you might hear one of us say,
"Go show your buddy!"
When they are gone to special area,
we use their computers or spread out in their classroom.
Vice versa.
There really are no boundaries.
It's amazin' even what the "little" kids
often teach my "big" kids.
Overall, partnerin' between students
creates an essential motivation component
of our learnin' environment.

Some examples of our buddy partnerin' up:

If the leprechaun was your teacher, what would
he/she teach you?

If you found a pot of gold, what would you spend the gold on?

These are still on sale until 3/2.

I've also decided to link up with Farley from Oh' Boy 4th Grade
for March's Currently:
Listenin': To my stomach grumble.  I'm pretty sure it's
past my feedin' time.

Lovin': That I got to sleep in this mornin'.  This will keep me from
havin' to nap today!

Thinkin': I am attendin' a weddin' at the end of March in Georgia.
I seriously need to get on bookin' the room.
Maybe the area won't be as busy as ours with Spring Break.

Wantin': I NEED an unlimited life-time gift card to Jane.com.
I'm assumin' it's not always a good thing when you get a package
in the mail...every.single.day.
I can't stop.

Needin': I need an extra weekend day...every week.
Do you know how productive I could be with a three day weekend?
I would be Super Ali.

???:  Diet Coke, lightning, butterflies
I have given you three possible answers...now you have
to guess the correct question.

Be sure to leave bloggy love for others.
Happy Saturday friends!

  1. That is so great that you get to teach right next to your very bestest friend. It is also great that you have all that you two have such an open door (literally and figuratively) and that your students are reaping the benefits. I am guessing things you love (but don`t ingest : ) )

  2. Fabulous explanation of how buddies works! I would love that sort of collaboration with a teacher in my building (something to work towards!). Your question--could it be "things that freak you out"? I, too, would love an extra day every weekend! Sounds glorious. Happy weekend!

  3. I am green with envy about your accordion wall, working with your bestie and your buddy classes. That is totally cool!

Hmm... the lightning is throwing me off... Are these things you love? You can't dislike Diet Coke, that would be shameful, or butterflies for godness sake. Lightning though? I am assuming watching it from inside. Do tell!

  4. How fun that you're right next door to your best friend!!! I love that you buddy up with them and give the students someone to look up to! I just did this with my 4th graders and college students! :) Hmmm....question to your answer..... are these a few of your favorite things?!

  5. Love your blog and post! I had never heard of Jane.com before your post. I sometimes live under a rock. What a great site! I just spent a ton of time scrolling through all the pretties. The prompt 'What would a Leprechaun teach me?' is such creative writing activity. Can you imagine if you learned how to go over a rainbow?!?!?!? The students must really get in to this prompt.

  8. It sounds like you have an ideal situation with being able to have your BFF teach right beside you and buddy up for all those fantastic activities. I'm a *smidge* jealous! Having a great partner to work with makes the ups and downs of teaching so much better!
I know you love Diet Coke but are trying to quit, so I'm guessing your question is: What do I love? You can't quit lightning and butterflies...or can you?!? haha

  9. How fun would it be to teach with your best friend everyday? I hope you are around the same age because if one of you retires first, the other is sure to go into serious withdrawal! Which brings me to your currently question. I know you LOVE Diet Coke but were really trying to quit so, knowing you, the answer has to be more complicated than these are the things you love, right? Maybe these are some things that you love but you can't keep? :) Do tell!

I have never heard of Jane.com! Shocking, I know! :)

  10. I wish we had pod areas at our school! My teammate and I often spill out into our side hallway which totally annoys the stuffy teachers who work around us. Of course we find all the more reason to have kids out there then. We have to use all available space. :)
    I love Jane too!

  11. So fun to have buddies! And, I bet those 3rd graders squeal with delight when it's time to buddy up! And, I totally agree, it's great for the 5th graders too! And, also the teachers! Win-win-win! :) I used to do 1st grade buddies, but I haven't done it for several years. You've motivated me to start again! I can't even guess what those 3 things have in common, but I know you love Diet Coke and butterflies, but lightning?! Thanks for sharing and linking up!

  13. Great post - wish I had some "buddies" to work with but I teach the most behaviorally challenged students in the whole school. Jane.com is new to me too!

  15. I loved hearing about your buddy activities! What a fun way to use the cards. You are so lucky to teach next to such a good friend.

Sometimes I have to force myself not to look at Jane.com when I get their daily e-mails - just so I won't buy something else. So many tempting things!!

  16. Your Jane.com addiction is like my Amazon addiction. There should be a addiction program for us somewhere, right??? (Although I did order that cute chevron maxi skirt from Jane.com just this morning...) Shop on, sister!

  17. How awesome that you and your best friend teach next door to each other!! I was so fortunate to work with two amazing teachers (who became my best buds) for four years at my previous school. I definitely miss them now that I am at a new school site. Yes!! I think we need three day weekends! A day to relax, a day for errands/cleaning, a day for fun! I suppose we can dream :)
