Spark Student Motivation...writing video...

YAY, I finally made it back to a Spark Student Motivation Saturday with my buddy, Joanne, from
Head Over Heels for Teaching.  I am tryin' to spark some motivation in myself and get better about plannin' my blog posts ahead of time.

My district made a video recently to spark some student motivation with our students in the area of writin'. Each gradin' period we have a District Writing Assessment that we grade by followin' a provided rubric, based off of the 6 Traits of Writing. In Florida, we will have the FCAT(our state test)Writing Assessment for grades 4,8, and 10 in February. The District wide assessments each gradin' period are to help take some of the pressure off the 4, 8 and 10 teachers and to ensure we are writin' across the board in all grade levels throughout the year. Pairin' the tune to a popular song with easy to remember lyrics definitely allows for this catchy song to get stuck in one's head. I provided a copy of the lyrics for my students and placed the video and lyrics in their Edmodo library for them to access at any time. I have caught several of them singin' this song...on their own.

What do you do in your classroom to spark student motivation?

  6. Excellent Lorde! No seriously, that was really ingenious.
    Who is doing the singing?
Also, and I mean this seriously--that is a really good song choice because the words aren't too fast and your can really understand the meaning of the words. Too many times we (teachers) will make these videos and the lyrics just fly by--kids have no clue what they've said.

    thanks
