Friday night was Jerm's birthday. It was also the first game of College Football for the Miami Hurricanes(They won and that makes me happy). Jerm is a Florida State Seminoles fan, so we don't really get along much durin' Football season. Luckily, his two brothers are also Hurricanes fans, so I have some back-up!
This week I randomly called out, "The first person to get their chair stacked without anyone gettin' hurt or anyone talkin' will get 10 extra computer minutes or free choice on your device" or "Whoever picks up the most trash will not have an Edmodo assignment tonight". It's amazin' what those little words will motivate students to do. I've never seen 5th graders scurry around so fast! I also have a new student that just found out that I will be competin' against my students in A.R. He read THREE chapter books last week. I like to get involved and be one of the kids...sometimes. It's unbelievable what I can get them to do when they THINK they are goin' to beat me! A.R. starts next week...let the games begin!
I am goin' to New Orleans on Saturday for the New Orleans Saints(my love) vs. Atlanta Falcons(Jerm's love) game on Sunday @ 1:00 p.m. SO EXCITED! I got Drew Brees in all three of my NFL Fantasy Football Leagues during drafts this past week. WooHoo...even more yellin' will be goin' on!
I'll be back on Tuesday for Fourth Grade Flipper's Tried it Tuesday...see you then!
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment in my "working" box :)
ReplyDeleteI am jealous you are heading to a Saints game! I love some football! Have fun!

Thank you! I'm so excited I can't stand it. I haven't been to a game in two years!
DeleteThanks for stopping by my blog and leading me to yours! I'm jealous of your couch potato weekend! I was hoping for one of those and didn't get it :(. Those lazy days are must at the beginning of the school year! I'm sure you deserved it!

FabandFunin4th!
Thank you! Yes, it felt amazing. I finally got up off my bottom and went to school today for six hours. I didn't get nearly enough accomplished, but I feel better about my pile.
DeleteYay I just found your blog through the linky and have started following along- I teach year six in New Zealand which is the equivalent of fifth grade so I love finding other bloggers with similar aged kids.
ReplyDeleteWhat's AR? I love getting in and doing what the kids do too- it's a struggle keeping up with the amount some of them read though! I love reading but man being an adult really gets in the way of reading time haha!

Magic Mistakes & Mayhem
Welcome! I have been following your zentangles....can't wait to try it with my kiddos! A.R. is a program we have here called Accelerated Reader. Students read books and then take tests online. The program tracks how many points they earn, percentages of test questions answered correctly, and amount of words read. It's purely for motivational purposes, but the competitions get pretty heated. I struggle between reading Young Adult books to take tests with the kids and reading adult books on my Kindle. Not enough time in the day!!!
DeleteGreat motivators! My former fifth graders would have been scurrying too! :0)
ReplyDeleteHave a great week--
Sarah @ Hoots N Hollers
I love to watch them scurry! So fun!
DeleteIsn't it funny how quickly they move??!! They fall for it EVERY time! haha I like how you added, "with no one getting hurt!" Safety first! LOL! Have you heard of mystery trash? You would love it!
ReplyDeleteGreat picture of you and Jerms!
Thanks for sharing and linking up my friend! :O)

Head Over Heels For Teaching
I must hear about this mystery trash! I'm guessing that it's I'm thinking of a piece of trash and whoever gets it, gets the prize. Yes?
DeleteI feel ya on the couch potato thing. Sometimes you just gotta chill on the couch in your jammies until 5pm. Catch up on all those shows that are saved on the TiVo. I always feel bad when I do nothing all day, but I'm soooo lazy. I refer to myself as "The laziest person this side of The Mississippi."
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm stealing that AR idea too! I love the idea of the kids competing with the teacher for AR points. Now, how do you do this, as far the books you read? I can't imagine any of my Jane Green books are on AR.
Finally, you have no idea how jealous I am that you're goin' to New Orleans. That's my favorite city! Have a Hurricane for me! ; )

I get on www.arbookfind.com and look for books that are worth points. I tend to look for Young Adult books that are worth a ton of points: Harry Potter series, City of Bones series, etc. books they wouldn't normally read in the class, but I can still take tests on them and get points. There are a ton of Young Adult books on there.
DeleteI will be sure to take lots of pics in New Orleans just for YOU! :) <3
THREE fantasy leagues...wow. I'm a little jealous. I'm only doing one...I'd love to do more though.
ReplyDeleteHave fun at the game (if it didn't already happen).

Digital: Divide & Conquer
I got roped into all three of them..it's crazy! I'm a little bit worried that I might not be able to keep up. Two are on ESPN and one is on Yahoo. I'll be toggling between both apps.
DeleteIt is AWESOME that you are competing against your kids in AR! What great motivation!!
ReplyDeleteI am a tad bit competitive too and that really gets my kids fired up...Usually in a good way!
Can't wait for football next Sunday. Go Pack!!
Thanks for linking up with a Peek at Your Week!

You are so very welcome! I'm going to ignore your "Go Pack!" comment. Lol!
DeleteI'm a Florida State fan too, so Jerm and I would get along well! My daughter graduated from FSU last year! I'm actually watching their game against Pittsburgh right now and they are kickin' butt!!! Anywho, love the photo of you two....very nice! Have a fantabulous week...:)
